Volunteers’ Week 2025

Volunteers’ Week returns this year after reaching its 40th anniversary last year. From 2 to 8 June 2025, AVOW will join thousands of charities and voluntary organisations recognising the contribution volunteers make across the UK.

Running every year since 1984, the week provides a crucial opportunity to thank volunteers and recognise the value of their time, passion and skills. The campaign highlights the diversity and unity of volunteer work across the UK.

Many will take part in awards ceremonies, coffee mornings and days out during the week. The celebrations aim to foster connections between national organisations and grassroots groups, celebrating the spirit of volunteering that enriches communities each year.

This Volunteers’ Week AVOW will be celebrating volunteers throughout Wrexham County through 2 events.

High Sheriff Julie Gillbanks (2025-2026) and her escorts, Harry and Angharad

The first event, the youth event, is aimed at celebrating youth and youth volunteering. This was held at Y The Lab on Eagles Meadow. The High Sheriff or Clwyd, Julie Gillbanks gave out the certificates to the volunteers. The High Sheriff was accompanied by two cadet volunteers, Harry and Angharad who support Ms Gillbanks at events and celebrations. Ms Gillbanks spoke passionately about volunteering, saying that “It was a lovely evening. I felt privileged to be amongst so many young volunteers. You are special young people and we should celebrate your achievements. Well done all. [..] thank you to AVOW for recognising their contribution.”. The event included a demonstration of a form of dance called Waacking by Jefrey Ariola, better known to the Waaking community as ‘Classy J”.

Cllr Tina Mannering and Dawn Roberts-McCabe

“Volunteers’ Week is our biggest event of the year. It is important that it is – it celebrates the unsung superheroes of Wrexham. They make an incredible contribution to the local life can community. Wrexham wouldn’t be the same without them. “  – Dawn Roberts-McCabe, Chief Officer of AVOW

The Second event, the event for those over 25, was celebrated in Ial Restaurant in Coleg Cambria. The Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Tina Mannering was present to give out certificates to the volunteers. The Mayor spoke about her passion for volunteers, saying how grateful she was for their work throughout the county.

Videos by Beccy Gittins MP and Actor Ian Puleston-Davies have also been sent to say a great big thank you to volunteers.

Becky Gittins MP said

Actor Ian Puleston-Davies (Pennyworth, Coronation Street) said

“I just want to take the opportunity to thank all you volunteer for giving up all the time you do for nowt. It really does go a long way […] keep up the good work, and know you are doing a wonderful job”

Volunteers’ Week is led by the UK Volunteering Forum, a partnership between Volunteer Scotland, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) and Volunteer Now in Northern Ireland.

The UK Volunteering Forum said: “Volunteers bring a richness to organisations across the country. There is no better time to recognise the diversity of our volunteers and celebrate the difference that volunteering makes than during Volunteers’ Week. Without volunteers many charities just simply could not function, with so many people giving up their time and going above and beyond. The week is a chance for all of us to show just how vital they are to charities and communities everywhere.”
