“After being out of work for several months, I could really feel my lack of experience holding me back. I had been advised to consider volunteering before, but wasn’t really sure what volunteering would involve so I wasn’t too keen. Still I didn’t seem to be getting anywhere on the job front, so I agreed to have an interview with an Advisor at the Volunteer Centre in AVOW and I was amazed at the variety of opportunities available – much more than I’d expected! I wound up helping Age Concern with the digital changeover and starting training with the Youth Justice Service to be a volunteer mentor.
Both were enjoyable in their own right, as well as giving me a great boost on the jobs front – shortly after volunteering I started work at AVOW, where I have since learned it was the volunteering mentioned on my CV that made them consider me for the job. So overall I would have to say volunteering was a good move for me!”
