Wrexham Social Care Workforce Development Partnership (SCWDP)
The Council is represented on the Steering Group of the North Wales Regional Social Care Partnership and is an active member. This partnership was set up in response to the recommendation of the Welsh Assembly Government’s Task and Finish Group on Workforce Issues in Social Care in September 2001.
The Council has established two Workforce Groups for the county, one for Adults and one for Children’s Social Care. Membership includes: Local Health Board, Further and Higher Education providers, Independent Care Providers (both residential and domiciliary care), Early Years, voluntary sector, Job Centre Plus and Careers Wales as well as internal department such as Commissioning.
The overarching objective of both groups is:
“to work together in partnership in order to provide high quality, care sector services for the people of Wrexham, by developing the workforce to build on the work of the Regional Social Care Partnership”.
The key objectives are:
- To raise the profile of the care sector, internally and externally
- To co-ordinate training
- To share good practice e.g. around Recruitment and Retention
- To increase access to training funds
- To identify the specific workforce issues for Wrexham – short/medium and long term
- To share information/provide co-ordinated response to consultation papers
- To respond to workforce initiatives (e.g. as directed by Welsh Assembly Government)
These Partnerships are available to all interested parties across the sector and have concentrated on practical issues such as:
- A partnership between the Council and Yale College providing NVQ training for the sector, which has led to over 900 qualifications.
- Raising the profile of careers in social care through local careers/jobs fairs, information packs and joint working with Careers Wales and Job Centre Plus to promote vacancies in the sector
- Moving and Handling Passport for the Independent Residential Sector commissioned by the Partnership.
