Search for new Chancellor for Wrexham Glyndŵr University
By Professor Maria Hinfelaar, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive
February 2018

Trevor Jones OBE was appointed as Chancellor in December 2015 and his term will complete at the end of this year. The University is now commencing a search for his successor and is inviting nominations from staff, students, governors and wider stakeholders such as University Fellows.

In making nominations, the following terms of reference for the Office of Chancellor at the University apply:

• The Chancellor is an honorary appointment and he/she is a ceremonial figurehead       and plays an important ambassadorial and representational role;
• The Chancellor presides over the University’s awards ceremonies and in addition may attend other University events;
• The Chancellor may provide counsel to the Chair of the Board of Governors and the Vice-Chancellor when asked to do so;
• The Chancellor may make recommendations to the Board, through the Nominations Committee, about the appointment of Honorary Fellows of the University;
• The Chancellor is not an employee of the University and need not be a member of the Board of Governors. As Chancellor he/she has no statutory responsibilities nor any involvement in the appointment of Board members or Officers of the University.
Bearing in mind these terms of reference, it should also be considered that the role of Chancellor implies a strong affinity with the ethos and values of the University and with our wider region. It is a high-profile role which will require a level of passion and commitment, even though it does not have any executive or governance powers. Past Chancellors, such as Lord Barry Jones and Sir Jon Shortridge, and the current Chancellor, Trefor Jones OBE have all set an excellent example in that regard.

In considering suitable candidates, please be reminded that this is a confidential process and nominees should not be approached at this stage.
Nominations should be submitted by March 16th to the Clerk of the Board, Val Butterworth at v.butterworth@glyndwr.ac.uk or to the Senior Executive officer in the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Gerry Beer at g.beer@glyndwr.ac.uk. Please provide a short written rationale for your nomination.

The Board’s Nominations and Governance Committee will meet in April to review the nominations received; they will then make final recommendations to the full Board of Governors. This process will run parallel to the call for Honorary Fellows in 2018.
