National Strategy for Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management

12 Week Consultation on the New Draft National Strategy for Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management in Wales, launched today 24th June 2019.

Plans for managing flood and coastal erosion in Wales into the next decade  unveiled

New proposals to tackle flood risk and coastal erosion through ‘green infrastructure’ and consideration of climate change in new flood risk maps have been set out by the Welsh Government.

With over 245,000 properties at risk of flooding from rivers, the sea and surface water, the Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths, has today (24 June) launched a consultation on a new National Strategy for Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management in Wales.

The strategy sets out proposals to manage the risks from flooding and coastal erosion up to 2028 but also looks forward to how we can better understand and address risk in a more sustainable way.

Wales’ climate is changing and, in coming years, is likely to experience more frequent and severe floods, rising sea levels and faster rates of erosion of the coast.
The new strategy builds on the Welsh Government commitment to invest over £350 million in flood and coastal erosion risk management over the life of this Government (2016-2021).

The strategy has been prepared alongside updated planning advice in Technical Advice Note (TAN) 15, which will be launched for consultation shortly.  It will set out how the Welsh Government expects its precautionary policy of seeking to avoid development in areas of flood risk to be delivered.
