Government publishes Bill to Withdraw from the European Union

The UK Government has published the Bill to put in place the legal framework for the United Kingdom after it withdraws from the European Union.

The European Union (Withdrawal) Bill was described before its publication as the “Great Repeal Bill”. In the event this has turned out to be a misnomer as once the reader penetrates beyond the clause which deals with the repeal of the European Communities Act 1972, which took the UK into what was the European Economic Community or the “Common Market”, the Bill is concerned with retaining and adapting legislation.  In addition to repealing the 1972 Act and later legislation concerned with the adoption of subsequent European Treaties the Bill contains provisions for:
