Commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day 2020 with #75MemorialFlames

Community groups across Wrexham County Borough have come together to create a large-scale mural on Queen’s Square, Wrexham. The mural has been selected to be part of Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s ‘75 Memorial Flames’ exhibition in London.

The Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham (AVOW), in partnership with community groups across Wrexham County Borough have been selected to facilitate the production of the mural, which will measure 8ft by 20ft when completed.

AVOW are facilitating art workshops with community groups to add their ‘footprint’ to the mural, including hand-prints, boot-prints and wheelchair tracks to represent the diversity of the local community. Groups include the Wrexham Homeless Art Club with National Theatre Wales, PlassyLanders Drama Club at The Land Plas Madoc, Wrexham Youth Service at Caia Park Partnership, Gwersyllt Resource Centre, Little Sunflowers Childcare, Portuguese Language Community Group (CLPW) and Third Sector representatives at the AVOW Christmas Reception and Christmas Carol Service, including the High Sheriff of Clwyd Stephanie Catherall and the Mayor of Wrexham, Councilor Rob Walsh.

The mural will be laid out and photographed on Queen’s Square, on Tuesday 7th January 2020 and the final photograph will be printed on canvas and displayed at the London exhibition on Monday 27th January 2020 alongside other memorial artwork by organisations from across the UK. The exhibition, curated by Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and launch the 2020 theme of ‘Stand Together’ for Holocaust Memorial Day internationally.
