Health, Social Care & Wellbeing

The third sector has a key role to play in promoting health and wellbeing. Many third sector organisations work directly in health and social care, whilst others work to improve the social determinants of health and support wellbeing.

The Welsh Government and statutory partners, such as health boards and local authorities, recognise that the third sector is a key partner in developing and delivering health, social care and wellbeing services. The third sector provides a range of accessible and appropriate preventative and reablement services; support groups and networks; and is a valuable source of information and advice on a variety of subjects.

Recognising the impact the sector has, in the Social Services & Well-being (Wales) Act 2014, the Welsh Government places a duty on local authorities to promote the involvement of the sector when providing care and support to people who need and care and support, and carers who need support; to improve their wellbeing.

The third sector is a valued partner because we provide a range of services to a diverse population, and we are independent. There are approximately 3,000 organisations across Flintshire and Wrexham, working with older people, children and young people, people with a learning disability, physical disability or sensory impairment, people experiencing mental health issues, and more.

Community groups can often reach and engage with people who wouldn’t normally engage with statutory services, and help them get involved with shaping services to meet their needs. Third sector organisations are often able to take on projects that statutory services cannot, because they can be flexible, creative and innovative.
