Do you feel disillusioned with Welsh Politics?
Would you like to get more involved in public life and have an impact on the decisions that are made that affect you and your communities?
Applications open for EYST’s Routes to Public Life Mentoring Programme.
Routes to Public Life Mentoring Programme
EYST Wales is recruiting for the third round of the successful Black, Asian and ethnic minority (BAME) Routes to Public Life Mentoring Scheme which aims to help ethnic minority/BAME people to develop political skills and increase their impact in public life. We invite applications from BAME people (aged 18+) who have a clear interest in politics and/or public life and a commitment to their own and other’s development.
The scheme will run from 23rd September 2020 until 30th March 2021 and will include:
- 1-1 mentoring with highly influential people including Members of Senedd, members of public boards and senior leaders in public and voluntary sectors
- Bespoke training sessions on political influencing, communications, and campaigning
- A trip to UK Houses of Parliament (virtual or in-person)
Previous mentees have gained positions as elected Head of Equalities for Plaid Cymru, appointed board member to Careers Wales, youth representative for local Labour party, school governors and charity trustees. Another mentee is currently campaigning to be selected as an assembly member candidate.
Nirushan Sudarsan says of his experience: ‘The Mentoring programme, and my mentor the Deputy Minister Jane Hutt, have given me the capacity to believe in myself that I can make a positive change here in Wales whether it is small or big.’
Commitments
Time commitment is one hour per month for mentoring sessions and 4-6 hours per month for training (currently planned as videoconference format.) We will notify people by early September if they have been accepted into the project and matched with a mentor.
