This online course delivered in real time to a limited number of participants, will offer the essentials of a trauma informed response in the context of the current situation. For most people, COVID-19 will be associated with increased uncertainty, anxiety and stress. Stressful and frightening events can create threats to our sense of security, feelings of grief, and loss of power and control in our lives. As the UK gradually starts to come out of the lockdown, practitioners from all settings will be reconnecting with the children and young people that they work with. A priority at this time must be to try to help children make sense of what has happened in their lives over the past few months, and for professionals to be able to plan for easing of restrictions.
Children may have been exposed to traumatic events relating directly to the COVID- 19 virus, or from situations happening in their homes and community during this time of lockdown. Children and young people are particularly vulnerable when they have little interaction outside of their household or intervention from the community or formal support services. It is important to listen to children, observe how they are interacting, and to recognise their behaviour as communication. An understanding of trauma, what it involves, how it impacts on emotional and physical wellbeing will help practitioners be able to recognise and support children at this crucial time and as we transition out of isolation.
By the end of the course, participants should:
- Understand what childhood adversity and trauma is
- Know how trauma affects children’s lives, including their short and long-term development
- Be able to recognise possible signs of trauma
- Have an understanding of the key elements of trauma-informed practice
- Have an opportunity to explore trauma in the context of COVID-19
This course is also offered as in-house training, please contact email@example.com for more information.
