Wrexham Area Civic Society – February Meeting

Thursday15th February 2018

“THE HOWARD DE WALDEN FAMILY, CHIRK CASTLE, 1911 – 1946, THE SOCIETY YEARS – ABOVE AND BELOW STAIRS”.

A talk by Jill Burton

The next talk to be given at a meeting of the Wrexham Area Civic Society will take place on Thursday15th February 2018.

Jill Burton will give a presentation entitled “The Howard De Walden Family, Chirk Castle, 1911 – 1946, The Society Years – Above and Below Stairs”.

Jill will be talking about Thomas Scott-Ellis, the 8th Lord Howard de Walden, one of the wealthiest men of his time, who leased Chirk Castle from 1911 to 1946. Described as “an Englishman turned Welshman” (his Bardic name was ‘Ellis o’r Waun’) he was a widely knowledgeable poet and playwright, soldier and artist, Olympic sportsman, medievalist and sponsor of the arts. The castle and its large domestic staff thus played host to prominent politicians, artists, musicians and writers of the day.

Jill retired 6 years ago after working for 21 years as Education Officer for the National Trust at Erddig and Chirk Castles. She spent many years collecting memories and stories from past employees and those who remembered the ‘Howard de Walden years.

The meeting will take place at Ty AVOW, 21 Egerton Street, Wrexham at 7.15 pm, until about 9.00 pm.

All are welcome, admission is free.  The Society would be pleased to welcome you.
