About AVOW

The Land set to star in an American documentary film in 2013!

The Adventure Playground known as ‘The Land’, its staff and children have recently attracted international attention due to the unique way in which play is celebrated and provided for, resulting in an online pledge to raise capital funding for a full documentary to be filmed in the spring 2013.

‘The Land’ is a ‘junk’ playground based in Plas Madoc, Wrexham adjoining the Opportunities Centre. The facility is managed by AVOW (Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham) and was established as a result of capital funding from WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Network). In addition to funding from Wrexham County Borough Council Families First initiative, the playground has recently received confirmation of Welsh Government Communities First funding and also funding from Children in Need specifically to work with children who are at risk of exclusion.

Fundraising began in December 2012 and on the 8th of January 2013 the target $9,500 was met. A total of 106 backers from various parts of the world recognise the importance of play provision and as a result have pledged money ranging from $1 to $1000.

Lots of comments have been made on the website; one in particular states “This could turn into one of the most valuable Playwork teaching resources EVER!! I’m in! -Love it!”.

For AVOW, the 8th of January 2013 marks a special day as it was a year to the day that the playground opened its gates for the first time. During the past year there have been over 9,000 visits to the playground by children and young people living in Plas Madoc and surrounding areas.

Claire Griffiths, AVOW Play Department Manager said: “This is such an exciting time for the community and AVOW, we are looking forward to welcoming the film crew in the spring this year. It is encouraging that so many people recognise the value of children’s opportunities to experience free play and the importance of taking risks during childhood”.

John Gallanders, Chief Officer for AVOW said: “This is a fantastic acknowledgement for all of the work that has gone into making ‘The Land’ such a success. This is AVOW’s Silver Jubilee year and we are looking forward to celebrating all our successes together”
