New play projects for children in Wrexham County Borough!
The summer holidays will see the launch of some exciting new play projects managed and delivered by the Play Department of the Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham (AVOW).
Children will have the opportunity to play on ‘their doorsteps’ through an innovative ‘Street Play’ scheme. This involves providing the resources for children to play freely and independently within their communities.
Street Play is a mobile, staffed playscheme which is free for all children aged 5-15. The projects will operate all year round in all of the communities for the next eighteen months and will be run in partnership with the Wrexham County Borough Council Play Development Team.
The Play Provision is one element of the new Urban Villages Communities First Programme funded by the Welsh Government. The Urban Villages Communities First Delivery Plan, which is implemented and managed by the Wrexham County Borough Council makes a firm commitment to providing support and opportunities that will help young people, in nine communities in Wrexham County Borough, maximise their potential.
AVOW’s Play Development Department receives funding from the Communities First Programme to maintain the existing play projects in Plas Madoc and Gwenfro wards of the County Borough as well as introducing Street Play and Open Access Play activities into the seven new areas included in the Programme.
The areas form the Communities First Urban Villages Cluster include: Plas Madoc, Cefn Mawr, Pant, Penycae, Brynteg, Llay, Brymbo and Gwersyllt.
Claire Griffiths, AVOW Play Department Manager said: “We are really looking forward to working in the new communities, our aim is that children’s play will become a regular feature in all of the communities. We will also be working closely with parents/adults within the communities to increase their confidence in allowing their children to play out.”
