AVOW & SURF THE SPONSORED SLEEP OUT FOR THE HOMELESS
This Christmas not everyone will be enjoying a peaceful time with the family. Many people are forced to sleep rough on the streets. To raise awareness a group of staff and volunteers will be joining them for one night only.
Staff and volunteers of AVOW are sleeping rough for the night on Friday 7th December 2012 from 7pm until 7am the following day. The Sleep Out Event will take place around Wrexham and the aim of it is to make people aware that anyone anywhere can end up on the streets. The Sleeping Out staff and volunteers will have to make their own sleeping rooms, whether it will be a tent or a box.
Chris Roberts, the Manager of Health and Social Care Department, who takes part in the Sleep Out Event, said: “We are seeing an increasing number of homeless people come into AVOW looking for support. It’s a problem that will continue to grow particularly when the new welfare reforms bite. I’m taking part in the sleep out because I feel that’s one of the ways I can show support and bring it to the public attention.”
We aim to raise awareness of this problem as well as raise contributions towards the Homeless Collection, which is taking place until 17 December 2012 around Wrexham County Borough. Food, clothes and contributions donated will help homeless people throughout winter and they can make this a less traumatic experience.
For the Homeless Collection, we are collecting food donations that can be easily heated such as ring pull cans, pot noodles, cup a soups and other ambient and snack food such as crisps, biscuits, and chocolate bars. AVOW are also looking for warm clothing, hats, scarfs and fleeces etc.
The Homeless Collection Points for donations will be based in:
– Tŷ Avow, 21 Egerton Street, Wrexham;
– Plas Madoc Opportunities Centre and
– Ysgol Rhiwabon, Ruabon.
